UEL Docklands Campus ::

Details
This futuristic accommodation complex situated next to the Royal Albert Dock in London's Docklands is now home to some 400 students from all over the world. The 5 residential blocks, together with teaching and recreational buildings were completed in the summer of 1999, and now provides the UEL with a 'state of the art' purpose-built facility located within striking distance of the heart of London. The project management team from Carillon (formerly Tarmac Construction) invited Prefect Controls to provide an energy conscious control solution for electric panel heaters in every study bedroom, as well as each kitchen. As economy-in-use was just as significant as capital cost to the decision making process, the tried and tested Prefect 4 Series central control approach, using mains signalling techniques was adopted.

The control system allows the facility manager to pre-set the maximum temperature when each room is occupied, together with a lower set-back temperature when the room is not occupied. Times of operation are also controlled centrally to ensure greatest economy whilst, at the same time guaranteeing comfortable temperatures are maintained. By applying this simple approach to the control of energy to over 500 heaters the energy savings have been enormous, and the low cost of the installation has resulted in a very rapid return on the capital investment.
