Kings College London ::

Details
This substantial architect designed block is situated on the south bank of the river merely a 'stone's throw' from Waterloo Station in the centre of the capital. Nearly 600 students are in occupation for nine months of the year, whilst the convenient location means that the University can rent the apartments during the summer vacation to overseas visitors, which helps to recover some of the operating costs of the facility. The complex has been in use for four years and comprises of an 8 storey building surrounding a landscaped central quadrangle; it provides residential accommodation together with a lecture theatre and gymnasium for students from throughout the world.

Heating and hot water throughout the flats was specified as electric. Efficient energy management was seen as vital to ensure temperatures are maintained at sensible levels, and times of operation reflect the daily schedule of the students. The Prefect 4 Series electronic central control approach, using mains signalling techniques was adopted to provide a high degree of control over the system, as well as the flexibility to change programmes simply and conveniently when needed. The management team at Stamford Street have seen the seasonal heating bills for the complex reflect only weather changes; and they have been protected from quite large variation factors usually associated with multi-occupancy dwellings. The Prefect 4 Series has enabled management to remain in control of their energy costs - particularly important when the Climate Change Levy begins to take effect!
