The picturesque view of Coastguard cottages at Dunwich Heath on the Suffolk coast does not completely capture the wide open heathland views from the historic observation tower. The National Trust, perhaps better known for its' involvement with the stately homes of Britain, owns several hundred holiday cottages and dozens of gift shops and tea rooms as part of the estate gifted by benefactors over the years. They also manage a great many more on behalf of third parties, so their retail and holiday interests around the UK are an important revenue earner. Because of fierce competition in the leisure field, The Trust sets very high accommodation standards, but because they operate as a charity, they must rigorously monitor and manage costs whilst also meeting the most exacting environmental standards.
Prefect Controls were asked to assist with their ongoing commitment to a measurable energy strategy. A heating control system was installed with accurate weather optimisation to control the heating in the gift shop and tea room at Dunwich Heath. The holiday cottages, which are let all year round, were included in the brief. So, Prefect adopted the approach of central control to allow the Unit Manager total control over the different zones, whilst the PRE7101 weather optimiser enhanced the efficiency and controllability of the electric storage system The PRE4000 Series provided the platform for the system using its communication over the existing mains network to control time profiles in individual zones, and PRE5100 occupancy sensors control individual room temperatures between the comfort and set-back programs. |
